Location & Geography
Marrakech is located in central Morocco, at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains, approximately 580 km southwest of Rabat (the capital). It sits in the Haouz Plain, a fertile area nourished by centuries of irrigation systems. The city is divided into the old medina, surrounded by walls, and the modern quarters like Gueliz and Hivernage.
🏰 Historical Significance
- Founded in 1070 by Yusuf ibn Tashfin of the Almoravid dynasty, Marrakech quickly became a political, cultural, and religious center of the western Islamic world.
- It served as the capital of various dynasties including the Almoravids, Almohads, and Saadians.
- The city's name was once used to refer to the entire country—“Morocco” in many languages is derived from “Marrakech.”
